Psychotherapy--is the provision by qualified practitioners of a formal and professional relationship within which patients/clients can profitably explore difficult, and often painful, emotions and experiences. These may include feelings of anxiety, depression, trauma, or perhaps the loss of meaning of ones life. It is a process which seeks to help the person gain an increased capacity for choice, through which the individual becomes more autonomous and self determined. Psychotherapy may be provided for individuals or children, couples, families and groups.   What is the difference between psychotherapy, psychology and psychiatry?   A Psychotherapist works with people who have emotional, behavioural, psychological or mental difficulties. The work is mainly to encourage the client to talk and explore their feelings, beliefs and thoughts, and often, their childhood. As a result the work is often long term, sometimes more than once a week. Psychotherapists are not trained to diagnose disorders but will often have trained to assess if someone is suitable for psychotherapy. Psychotherapeutic approaches may be based on scientific, humanist, psychoanalytical or philosophical thought and many others.      Here is a general overview of the differences between Psychologists, Psychiatrists and Psychotherapists:   All 3 work with people who have emotional or mental difficulties. All 3 work both in the Private sector and in the NHS. All 3 have had extensive training.   A Psychologist is a general term for someone who has studied Psychology, usually to degree level.   A Clinical Psychologist will have done further training to be able to administer Psychological Tests e.g. Personality tests, intelligence tests. Clinical Psychologists diagnose and treat disorders.  Psychologists are scientists and base their diagnoses and treatments on statistical evidence. There are also Forensic Psychologists and Educational Psychologists amongst others.   A Psychiatrist works within a Medical framework and so will have trained as a Doctor first and then specialised in psychiatry. Psychiatrists diagnose and treat disorders. Only Psychiatrists and Doctors can prescribe medication.   How can individuals distinguish the right 'talking' therapy?    Individuals who seek a 'talking' therapy can be met with huge amounts of therapeutic jargon that confuses the person, medicalises their symptoms and places the power in the relationship with the therapist. The fact that the person seeking therapy is often in a very vulnerable place to start with, makes it even more important that the profession of psychotherapy goes some way towards ensuring that when an individual seeks support by way of psychotherapy that this is as simple as possible. The individual should be able to find their way around the various types of therapy available supported by simple 'jargon-free' signposting, be guaranteed that their therapist is supportive, effective, responsive to their needs, safe to practice and is accountable.
