Green Waste Facts

 

Green waste is fruit and vegetable waste from the kitchen and garden waste, like grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, weeds and dead flowers.

 

1/3 of the average household bin is filled with green waste.

 

Green waste that is thrown away in the bin ends up being dumped in a landfill site.

 

Green waste in landfill sites takes up huge amounts of space and takes lots of journeys to get it there.

 

When green waste decomposes (or rots) in a landfill site, it produces methane, which is a dangerous ‘greenhouse’ gas. It also produces chemicals, called leachates, which can pollute the local land and water.

 

 

Green waste can be recycled at home by using a compost bin or making a compost heap. The waste rots down, to produce a brown, crumbly soil-like material, which can be used as food for the plants in the garden, to make them grow better.
